Tourism and Leisure are forming, now and in the future, the biggest economic pillars of ‘Western Zeeuws-Vlaanderen’. Its location where the Western Scheldt meets the North Sea is an important factor in this development. The changes in this economic sector have led to a need for quality improvement in general and from the biggest holiday seaside resorts in particular.
At the moment Cadzand-Bad is little known in the tourism sector. The development plan for Cadzand-Bad offers opportunities for its dramatic renovation. One of the currently important attractions of Cadzand-Bad, which will be further developed within the Transcoast project, is the Maritime Balcony.
The Maritime Balcony is situated at the western side on a unique junction in the urban development structure. It will be given a new solid and technical appearance. As a junction it is the main entrance to the village at the head of the Boulevard and at the end of the drainage canal, the point at which fresh water exits from the polders into the sea. The Balcony also lies at an intersection of routes through the line of dunes. The driving force for developments around this western entry lies in projects with a hydraulic engineering and civil engineering remit. The project ‘Zwakke Schakels’ (Weak Links) is ‘the leitmotiv’.
The objective is to make those reinforcement measures publicly accessible by investing in an attractive public space with a maritime appearance. In order to achieve this there will be investments in an 800 metre long platform which will create an attractive walking route. Two observation posts will be incorporated and the whole walkway will be finished with attractive lighting and street furniture. The result is a Maritime Balcony with wonderful views for people passing by in the summer.
The provision of facilities on the western jetty or pier offers several possibilities. For example, mooring places/berths could be created for visiting boats. The realisation of a small visitor’s marina is also a possibility that has been considered in the policy for the adjacent land. Currently several options are being investigated in consultation with the district water board. The maximisation of a maritime influence is of primary importance but in the final analysis the sea will determine the extent to which it will let us undertake our plans.
