The former ferry port at Perkpolder was abandoned after the recent opening of a tunnel below the Scheldt River. The provincial authorities in Zeeland decided to transform the port into a marina to create a new dynamism in the area. A major obstacle to this development is the fact that the ferry port is unsafe for yachts to use, due to currents and a commercial shipping lane nearby.
A second problem is the continuous silting up of the port entrance. This was previously prevented by the frequent passage of the large ferry boat and by frequently dredging the harbour. Transcoast will contribute to the design and implementation of modifications to create safe entrance to Perkpolder Marina. Concretely the investment relates to the construction of a narrowed entrance to the port, based on the design co-developed by Joint Activity Team 2. The exact parameters of the investment are therefore not yet determined. However, the works will consist of installing barriers or a sheltering dam covering part of the present harbour mouth.
Other elements of the project are the transformation of the ferry relics on land (huge carpark), a combination of houses and recreation facilities, combination of coastal defence (dikes) with other (recreational) functions and transformation of farmland into a landscape that combines nature with recreation facilities.
The area development Perkpolder
The transformation of the former ferry port is part of a lager area development. The area development Perkpolder combines residential, recreation and nature. On the former Veerplein in Perkpolder on an elevated area (mound) 250 homes, a luxury hotel / restaurant, conference facilities and a wellness centre will be built. At the foot of this bastion is a marina with 350-500 berths.
The central area of Perkpolder is surrounded by nature with new ditches and creeks, salt marshes and mud flats. In the western part of Perkpolder are 200 houses in a landscape built creeks, all safe behind the sea wall. Through the area meanders an 18-hole international class golf course. Outside the dike at the east part of Perkpolder is a 75 acre nature reserve. Recreational players in Perkpolder can hiking, biking, golfing, enjoy the view of the beach and the new landscape.
