In November 2002 the council of the municipality of Tholen decided that the marina and the village of Sint-Annaland are reconnected again.
Since the floods of 1953 the original harbour of Sint-Annaland was devided of the open water by a dike. In the space of the original harbour there was developed industry.
Situation 2011
Goal of the project Havengebied Sint-Annaland was to re-establish the connection between the old village of Sint-Annaland and the present marina. Therefore the industry had to be removed to another terrain, an empty polder had to filled in with houses and to gain money for this investments in the marina there were situated four appartmentbuildings. In total there has to be built about 280 houses, shops, restaurants and bars. The second goal of the project was to stimulate the coming of tourists and recreational use of the marina with an effect on the local economy.
During the Interreg program Maya the marina is upgraded by a new shopping quay for passers-by by boat. Besides this, the eastern part of the marina was upgraded with an complete new quay with berths. These berths are used for aluminium yachts, that are built here, and for yachts for rent. Some of the berths are also uses for yachts that come for repair.
As said is in the marina foreseen in the realisation of four appartmentbuildings with about 70 appartments. The biggest building will be a focal-point and landmark for Sint-Annaland for those who are sailing at Oosterschelde. Between those buildings and the water there will be constructed a connection, a promenade, between the infrastructural knot near the landmark at the western side of the marina and the pedestrian crossing by a special staircase, also accessible for less valid people (wheel-chair, rollator, scoot-mobile), that forms the connection to the village with his shops and own charm. This promenade is part of the Interreg project Transcoast.
The buildings that are built within the dyke will be historical of character, seen the connection with the village. The buildings near the marina will have a more modern character considering the new and modern yachts and the space of Oosterschelde. An indication of the buildings near the marina is seen here below.
