The safety improvements - installing a railing and lighting - are being implemented in the harbour of Breskens. These activities will be complete by the end of October 2011.

In addition, improvements to the sea-wall will make it possible to construct a harbour in Cadzand. During the decision process some difficult choices have to be made. The original plan was to build a marina of 60 berths for the summer period. Based upon an updated vision the municipality and the entrepreneurs of Cadzand have concluded that partners are to take a decision to build a marina which can accommodate 170 boats.

On the basis of these developments the municipality and the entrepreneurs of Cadzand new specifications, there is now an intense period of calculation regarding the extra investment necessary. This concerns the difference between the investment required to ensure the safety of the coastline without the construction of a marina (on the whole, this is a job of the Dutch state) and the cost of a safe coastline together with a 170 berth marina. A special (waterworks) bureau, Boiten Arnhem, has been hired to provide more clarity about the various cost components. The calculations will be complete this summer.

Meanwhile, work is being done on the layout of the area directly outside the harbour- the waterfront. The objective is to combine safety from flooding with spatial quality. Specifically, a promenade will be build which will provide an attractive link between ‘the balcony’ and the end of the breakwater, with various fixtures for pedestrian comfort so that visitors can enjoy the ever entertaining spectacle on the water. Even if the decision about construction of a large marina is negative, the basic plans for the upgrading of the special and attractive maritime environment will be carried out.
